I have to admit that I wasn’t really thrilled when I heard that I was invited to visit the BMW Welt (which means BMW World) in Munich last year. What sounds like a dream coming true for car enthusiasts was just a job for me, as I do love driving cars but do not care a tiny bit of which make it is. But – and that was a surprise for me – the BMW Welt is so cool that I really enjoyed my visit. The whole experience starts with arriving in front of the impressive building with its huge solar plant on the rooftop. It was constructed by the Vienna-based architects COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. The glass tower with its round shape and stands out like a beacon and is design-wise a masterpiece. The construction took four years and cost about 200 millions USD.
Once you are in there you can’t but admire the spacious hall that is used as an exhibition center, museum, event location and place where customers can collect their BMWs. If you’re there to pick up your car you’ll be given a very special staged experience, including your BMW brought to you from somewhere beneath the building via a round elevating platform. You can walk around there from exhibited car to exhibited car and just be impressed by their beauty, but I would highly recommend to take a guided tour. Even for me it was such an interesting experience to hear little bits and pieces of the brand’s history, hear about special cars, interior design and oldtimers of all brands belonging to BMW (such as Mini Cooper, for example).
There’s so much to learn and see that I’ll advise you to plan at least a few hours there, because there’s also a nice restaurant and you can buy some BMW merch – or your next car – there. It might not be very entertaining for younger kids, but you don’t have to be into cars to enjoy a visit there. The whole BMW Welt experience consists of permanent exhibitions, guided factory tours and the BMW museum which all have different opening hours, so I would advise you to check them out online before planning your visit.

Opening hours for the guided exhibition tours are Monday to Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm at the BMW Welt, the entrance is for free. If you’d like to visit the BMW museum, it’s 10 Euros/adult, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 am to 6 pm, Mondays closed. The last entrance is 30 minutes before closure.
