Kiss the Cook

American Breakfast at its best

Well, it’s not really a secret but in case you didn’t know: We love breakfast and therefore are always trying to find new places to start our mornings at. Not only Vienna (Austria) and France are breakfast heavens, but also North America. You won’t find a place that sells really bad breakfast there, it’s always at least average. But in Arizona, more specifically in Glendale/Phoenix, we found a nice restaurant we can warmly recommend because of it’s above average food: “Kiss the cook”.

It was opened in 1982 – that makes it for american standards even vintage – and ever since that day a huge part of the restaurant’s philosophy was the determination to sell homemade food made out of organic ingredients. To this day the people at “Kiss the Cook” meet these goals. Fluffy and golden pancakes, homemade pies, bacon, eggs in all varieties, hash browns, granolas, toasts, omelettes, english muffins… There’s nothing you might wish for which you won’t get at “Kiss the Cook.” For me, as an european coffee lover, one thing is always very important when it comes to breakfast: coffee. And the coffee there tastes great and I had more than one refill on that. And if you want to sleep a little longer: The lunch menu is also something definitely worth trying.

What we really liked there: The staff is very friendly and always up for a little chat. The atmosphere at the restaurant is really cozy and you feel more like having breakfast at your kiss-the-cook-pancakes-pouring-syrupfriend’s (or grandma’s) place than in a restaurant. And if you like, you can always buy certain parts of the decoration there. And the bill comes – of course – with a (Hershey) kiss. So if you are in this area, please take your time to check it out. Oh, and while you are at it: Could you also sneak into the kitchen and get us a pic of the cook? We forgot to kiss him and would like to know now what we missed.

Our recommendation:
The Cook’s Combo (2 eggs any style, 2 pancakes, 2 slices of  bacon, homemade mini-muffins) for about 7 $. And if there’s still some empty space in your tummy left, you should try the yogurt parfait for about 6 $.
