Hotel Lemongarden, Croatia

Okay, so summer might not exactly be around the corner by now, but it’s definitely already time to think about your next summer holiday. Or a little getaway in late spring. One destination you should keep in mind is the lovely Hotel Lemongarden in Croatia. And here is why:

The hotel is located on the small island of Brac, and I’ve always loved the look out of the plane’s window when flying over Croatia. From high up in the air you can already admire the beautiful ocean that showcases all hues of blue Mother Nature has to offer. Like pearls in a blue and velvety jewel case the many little islands sparkle in the sun, while sailing boats are bobbing in the ocean. Make sure to get a window seat for you flight to Split, where the main airport of Croatia is located, the views are breathtaking.

But it even gets better. The hotel’s driver picks you up at the airport and brings you either to a bay close by if you’ve arranged a pick-up service via the hotel’s water taxi or to the ferries. I opted for the water taxi option and was not disappointed. It took about half an hour to get to Sutivan, the village where the hotel is located. As soon as you board the speedboat and get closer to the hotel, everyday life seems to be further and further away, you relax while the salty ocean breeze plays with your hair and the sun kisses your skin. And if you’re truly lucky, you might even see dolphins.

The water taxi stops in Sutivan’s small harbor directly in front of the hotel. I was warmly welcomed by the owner and manager of the family run place, Ms Helena Ramsbacher. And that was more than a nice suprise; it’s one of the secrets of the hotel: you feel like you’re more than a guest. Maybe a long lost family member? The whole team strives for this unique atmosphere and of course, the surroundings add to that. Guests are staying in three individual more than 300 years old stone buildings, all in all there are 23 suites and 23 rooms, all of them with unique interior, spacious, with waterfront or garden views and all the modern amenities we’re so used to (like WiFi and flat TVs). But you won’t need any of those, if you’re a bit like me.

Because you won’t spend more than those few nightly hours inside your room – promise! First, there’s this beautiful lush garden waiting for you. Bougainvilleas, roses, hibiscus, palm and lemon trees and their sea of blossoms and wonderful scents invite you to spend time outside in this beautiful oasis in which’s center you find the iconic 30 meters long pool. It’s heated or cooled, depending on the season, and there are relaxing deck chairs and a very attentive pool service team that serves you delicious snacks, ice cold drinks and sweets (You. Have. To. Try. The. Lemon. Tarte.). The tranquility and serenity is somehow magical and inspiring. It soon became my favorite place on earth to work on my books.

If you feel more like beach you can use one of the provided bikes to go to the hotel’s private beach. It’s about ten minutes away, the biking path follows the coastline and leads you through a gorgeous pine forest. Once you’re there you’re welcomed by a quiet bay, a beautiful beach and again amazing service & food from the beach bar. If you don’t feel like taking a bike, you can also let a member of the team drive you around in a golf cart.

I’ve already stated how great the food was; let me point it out one more time: The food is great!! Regional, seasonal delicacies are served in the hotel’s own restaurant, accompanied by fine wines from the well stocked wine cellar. Make sure to reserve a table at the waterfront for your dinner, it’s such a romantic and beautiful way to spend an evening with a special person. Speaking of special: The hotel offers a wellness pavillion with a private spa as well, should you need a bit of help to relax.

All in all I spent unforgettable days on that island; The Lemongarden Hotel is a real gem. I loved all of it, especially the cozy and warm atmosphere. It’s obvious that the owners are a bit different from other hoteliers as it’s their main goal to make you as a guest feel at home at all times. I will come back, for sure. And if you should be looking for a sophisticated and luxury hideaway as well, you should consider this peace of heaven.
